Fremont Varsity Tennis 2nd at Knox Invite

September 21, 2011
By Brent Byler of Fremont High School

The varsity boys tennis team traveled to Knox Friday night to play in the always exciting Knox Invitational.  And what a day of intensity, motivation, determination, and guts Saturday turned out to be.  After the 2nd round of play, Fremont had 4 out of 5 positions playing in the championship match, more than at any other time in Fremont History and the final position playing for 3rd place.  The stage was set as Wabash had 3 out of 5 positions in the championships.  Matt Hoff battled and persevered at # 1 singles to sustain 3rd place and the #1 doubles team of Tyler Jenkins and Jake Bryant wiped out their final foe Hobart 6-1, 6-0.  With these two positions finished, Fremont and Wabash were standing toe to toe on the brink of winning the championship, with Matt Wilcox (@ #2 singles) and Brandon Miller (@ #3 singles) both taking on Wabash.  Both Wabash players would go on to win and create an opening for their school to win the championship.  But, it wasnt over yet.  Glen McClain and Andrew SMith battled Knox in the #2 doubles final and were fighting for Fremont to pull ahead.  They battled through 2 tough sets, but in the end wound up succumbing to the host team.  With no Fremont players remaining to play, all the Eagles could do was hope for Northwestern to defeat Wabash at #1 singles.  In a match that went to the wire in a 3rd set tiebreaker, the Wabash senior #1 singles player won and solidified his team's championship, forcing the Eagles to fall to 2nd place.

The final results were...

1st Place - Wabash (44 points)

2nd Place - Fremont (39 points)

Overall, the Eagles played an amazing day of tennis and finished with one position championship (#1 doubles - Jenkins/Bryant), three 2nd places (#2 singles - Wilcox, #3 singles - Miller, #2 doubles - McClain/Smith), and one 3rd place (#1 singles - Hoff).  ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF TENNIS PLAY BY ANY FREMONT TENNIS TEAM IN ITS 10 YEAR HISTORY !!!!!

Great job EAGLE TENNIS!

The Varsity travels to Prairie Heights to take on the Panthers tonight (MOnday, Sept. 19) in an NECC matchup starting at 4:45 pm.
