Smith Still Playing, Eagle Team Fights but Falls

May 19, 2011
By Brent Byler of Fremont High School

Wednesday night the Fremont Girls Tennis team traveled to DeKalb for the 1st round of the state tournament (sectional).  The entire team put on one of their best performances of the season, but in the end it wasn't enough as they lost to the Hornets of Angola 3-2.  Fremont had lost to Angola 5-0 in their regular season matchup, but with true determination, heart, and hard work faught back in the sectional to make it a tight match.  Caitlynn Smith at #1 singles and Rebecca Noyes at #3 singles earned the two position wins for the Eagles.  Caitlynn Smith played motivated tennis after losing the first set 6-1 to win the 2nd and 3rd sets, 6-2, 6-4 respectively.  Rebecca Noyes won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.  At all other positions the Fremont girls battled until the end and gave the Hornets all they could handle.  At #2 singles, Kylee Renfrew played most games to deuce, but simply didn't have an answer for Kirstyn Quandt's offensive game.  At #1 doubles, the combination of Jenna Garrison and Lexi Skeens (JEXI) lost the first set 6-3, but battled back in the second set to take the lead 4-3.  They continued to play well after that, but Angola improved their game and won 7-5.  At #2 doubles, Laura Dennis and Saige Driver competed strongly but couldn't outlast Angola as they fell 6-2, 6-4.  Overall, the girls finish the season with 7 wins and 7 losses (5-3 in NECC).

But, the season is not over for 1 FHS player. With Caitlynn Smith's win at #1 singles, she will move on to the individual sectional next Tuesday (May 24) at Homestead.  The brackets/draw will be posted on Monday.

Congratulations on a great team season and GOOD LUCK to Caitlynn at Homestead.
