Huge NECC Win for Eagles

May 12, 2014
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Fremont 4, Westview 3

Well, if you like tension, then this was the game for you. It felt like every inning was fraught with disaster, but we found a way out of it.

The introduction and conclusion were nicely tied together as Alex Beams began the game with a double off of the left field fence, and then made a parallel-diving catch of a line drive for the second Westview out of the seventh.

The only other common factor was Brock Baker on the mound: seven innings, three earned runs, and most importantly a win. After giving up a two-run homer in the second , the only run Brock allowed was a gift from the field umpire when Kaleb Hayes scooped a low throw from Alex for the (apparent) third out of the sixth inning. Welllllll, the field umpire decided -- inexplicably -- to call the runner safe. After I let the umpire know his mistake, ever so politely of course, Brock retire the last four hitters in a row to end the game.

Alex and Hunter Jordan each had two hits. Ryan Sichling added an RBI double, and Kyler Grange pounded a two-out, two-run single in the third inning.

Both teams ended with nine hits and neither team committed an error. The game took about an hour and a half to play.

Braxton Baker was once again stellar behind the plate and the outfield -- Nate Beatty, Sichling, and Grange -- did their jobs. Great team effort!

Currently, the Eagles sit at 5-2 in the conference trailing Angola (6-0) and both Westview and Busco (each 5-1), the one loss for each handed to them by Fremont. Lots of drama to come in the NECC!
