Wild Game Ends in Fremont Loss

April 29, 2014
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Fremont 9, Prairie Heights 19

I have never felt this way about a 10-run loss before. But after getting down 8-0 heading into the home half of the fifth and then tying it going into the seventh, I am proud of the team's effort and approach. They never gave up.

Playing without Alex Beams and Brock Baker, others stepped up and competed, including two young guys. Jordan Rode got his first varsity hit and had four quality at bats. Nate Midtgard played middle infield, turning a double play and tagging out a surprised Panther in a rather sneaky move.

Bryce Thomas got his first start at shorstop after coming back from his broken nose. On the mound, we walked far too many people (12 total) but Brice Schueler held us in it with 2.1 scoreless middle innings. Braxton Baker led the offense with three hits, including a huge two-run double that gave us the momentum necessary to stage the comeback.

The result wasn't what we hoped for, especially after fighting back -- especially when we review some plays we should have made (seventh inning infield popup anyone?). However, as I told the guys after the game, we showed growth in some areas that exceed the baseball field: toughness, positivity, avoiding being victims, and an ability to bounce back.
