Rough Day in Sturgis

April 19, 2014
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Game 1: Fremont 1, Vicksburg (MI) 11

The things that have made us successful so far went AWOL today. In game 1, our pitchers hit 3 batters, walked 8, and our defense made 6 errors. Hence, an 11-1 loss. Not much more to say about game one. We only had three hits: Alex Beams, Brock Baker, and Bryce Thomas.

Game 2: Fremont 5, Ruyard (MI) 9

Ryan Sichling had a productive and strange game. Ryan had 3 RBIs, including a sac fly and a 2-run double. He also got called out on a 3-0 pitch. Somehow the umpire decided Ryan had a full count rather than a 3-0 count. After a long argument and stoppage of play, he remained stubborn in his decision (even though the opposing team agreed with our book). The next pitch was a strike and he punched Ryan out. History made: the first one-strike K in baseball history. the ump summed it up best after the game when after Coach Smith asked for his name and umpire number, he said, "I don't have to tell you anything. You are from Indiana."

Alex and Brock had two hits apiece and Alex scored a couple of runs.Alex struck out four over three innings, allowing four unearned runs.

We must return to the style of baseball that keeps us in games: throwing strikes and making the routine plays. And getting three strikes as batters before being called out.
