Fremont Begins 1-0 in the NECC

April 16, 2014
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Fremont 6, Central Noble 1

The Eagles showed the recipe for their success Wednesday night in Albion as they played a complete all-around game. All three facets of the game were solid, leading them to a relatively clean win of the host Cougars.

Brice Schueler took control on the mound, although he had to do it pitching from behind too often. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out two. He was helped by excellent defense. He faced 21 hitters and threw only six first-pitch strikes. However, he walked only two. Brock Baker finished the game, overcoming some wildness of his own on this frigid and windy night.

In the second inning, the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs and we feared the worst. Instead, Brice struck out a batter and then induced the next guy to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning--Baker and Alex Beams made it look easy in the middle. The third went much the same way. With runners on first and second, Brice got a harmless popup and the next batter grounded the ball to Hunter Jordan at third who stepped on the bag and threw to first. Two jams escaped. After that it was much smoother.

The hitting star was a bit of a surprise as the big hit came from a freshman. After two runners reached in the fourth, Peppler hit a three-run blast over the left field fence. He becomes the first freshman to homer for Fremont in five years. Brock followed with a solo homer in the fifth. Dylan had two hits and four RBIs. Brock and Kaleb Hayes also had two hits.

The Eagles look to get win #2 in the conference Thursday night in Butler against Eastside.
