Tough Season Opener

April 8, 2014
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

After the first two innings, we seemed to be rolling. Bryce Thomas capped a four-run first inning with a two-out, two-run single. Brock Baker threw the first 2.1 innings and we made some plays defensively.

Unfortunately, we stopped hitting and Lakewood started getting some breaks. Two infield ground balls took strange bounces in the mucky infield, leading to three total runs. Brice Schueler, who pitched 2.2 innings and had his curveball working, was the victim of two of those runs.

In the bottom of the sixth up 5-3, the proverbial wheels fell off. Kaleb Hayes struggled a bit to find the zone, the second of the marsh ground balls, a tough call at first against us: this all added up to a four-run inning for Lakewood Park.

Bruiser Baker led the Eagles with two hits, including the first double of the season. Also, Kyler Grange got his first varsity hit.

The Eagles are on the field again tomorrow night as they host Adams Central. Thursday night, Fremont plays a 7:30 start time night game against Carson City, MI, at Indiana Tech's field. The week concludes with three games at the Coldwater Tournament.
