Willms STATE BOUND!!

February 16, 2014
By Eric Bryan of Fremont High School

Tylor Willms has earned his first birth to the state down at Bankers Life Fieldhouse today by placing runner-up at 152 lbs.  This is the first time Fremont has been back to the state finals series since 2005.  Willms came out his first match leading 12-3 with less then a minute to go, but got caught in a head throw, which turned into being quite the close call.  Second round, Tylor wrestled a solid match filled with many scrambles and was able to secure the ticket round match by decision 4-2 over Payton Walters of Columbia City.  Third round, Tylor wrestled Kaddis of Kokomo and was able to explode out from bottom with 7 seconds left to score an escape as time expired!  Heading into the finals, Tylor faced a tenacious opponent, Chandler Carroll (Yorktown) and lost by major decision 10-0.  I am absolutely thrilled for Tylor!  He has dedicated his youth to wrestling and has sacrificed his blood, sweat, and tears for this moment.  His mom Andrea has also invested a lot of time traveling with Tylor taking him to tournaments throughout the country in the offseason to improve his abilities and it is great to see the payoffs.  Tylor and I talked about being happy and enjoying the moment, but we are far from being satisfied.  Not to be forgotten, Fremont also had four other participants who laid it all out on the mat with no regrets.  Kyle Lowe started the Eagles off at 113 lbs, but lost by decision, 5-0 to Becker of Bellmont (the eventual 3rd place finisher).  David Schmucker wrestled yet another thrilling match by winning his first round in overtime, 5-3 over Eicher of Leo.  However, in the ticket round, David lost to the eventual runner-up Moore of Manchester 8-10.  Brock Baker wrestled his heart out against Heistand of Yorktown (the eventual champ), but fell late in the 1st period by pin. Brad Owen wrestled a physical 1st round match, controlling his opponent throughout the duration of the match and won by decision over Eicher of Leo 5-2.  In the ticket round, Brad fell short to Ross of Kokomo (the eventual 4th placer) 7-3.  It has been a great season and post season so far.  I give a lot of credit to my seniors for pushing each other to prepare for this moment and now it is time to get Tylor ready for Friday night!
