Fremont boys at Coldwater Tournament

January 9, 2014
By Ted Bookwalter of Fremont High School

Santa gave the varsity boys basketball team a couple lumps of coal dropping games to Dexter (44-63) and Eaton Rapids (72-85).

There is a silver lining in that several areas of fundamental play are improving for the varsity boys.  Turnovers are dropping rapidly as each player has made a focused effort to take better care of the ball with 11 and 12 turnovers respectively in these two games. Additionally, the Eagles were 21 for 59 from 3-point range for 36% shooting from behind the arc.

As the team continues to improve, focus will be squarely on defensive skills and rebounding skills. The Eagles are averaging 61 points per game on offense which is third in the NECC conference.  We must now bring tough nosed defense and maximum effort to the court to keep opponents under the 55 point mark in order to give us some margin on the positive side.

The leading scorers against Dexter were Alex Beams with 19 and Wade Regadanze with 9.  The leading scorers in the Eaton Rapids game were Alex Beams with 25, Wade Regadanz with 22 and Justin Papenbrock with 10.  Alex Beams also added 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

On a defensive note, Justin Papenbrock and Ryan Sichling shared defensive responsibilities on a division one prospect from Eaton Rapids who is averaging 30 points per game and held him (McDaniel) to 11 points.  Great job fellas!

Alex and Wade are currently averaging 18.1 and 14.7 points per game giving us some offensive punch.......now we need ....DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!!!!!!

On Friday the boys JV and Varsity play Churubusco at home followed by an away game against Reading on Saturday.
