Eagles 3rd at Knox Tourney; Miller Wins Championship
September 22, 2013By Brent Byler of Fremont High School
The Fremont boy's varsity tennis team traveled to Knox, IN for an 8-team invitational on Saturday and came away with a 3rd place team finish (only missing 2nd by 1 pt) and a #2 singles championship (Logan Miller). Knox is an interesting tournament as it features 7 schools the Eagles would otherwise never play throughout the season and 12 courts of predominately evenly matched teams. As a team, the Eagles had their lows and they had their highs throughout the day, but overall there were certainly MORE HIGHS than lows. Below is a list of some of the positives...
#1 Singles - Senior Mason Kolberg really starting finding his game and identifying what it takes to win at the #1 spot. After falling behind 1 set in his first match, Mason battled back with powerful groundstrokes and well patterned strategy to win the 2nd set 7-5. Eventually he fell a little short in the super tiebreaker, but what a great match. Mason took that experience with him into the next match and dominated the Hobart #1 singles players 8-2. GREAT JOB MASON!!!
#2 Singles - Sophomore Logan Miller played phenomonal tennis in each of his three victories to WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP in dominant fashion. Logan mixed in powerful groundstrokes, topspin lobs, backspin, and even drop shots to take the tournament title. CONGRATULATIONS LOGAN!!
#3 Singles - Sophomore Brandan Arnos also played well on the day and made his way to the championship match by defeating Northwestern in 2 sets and then withstood the pressure in a third set supertiebreak win over Tippecanoe Valley. In the final, Brandan fell to a talented Knox player...but continued to fight tooth and nail throughout. CONGRATULATIONS BRANDAN!!
#1 Doubles - The tandem of senior Jordan Sanderson and freshman Wade Regedanz battled in their 1st match, but fell in a super tiebreak 10-8. Throughout the day, both Jordan and Wade kept improving their communication and alley shots to pick up a big win over Whitko in their final match. GREAT JOB BEING PERSISTENT AND IMPROVING THROUGHOUT THE DAY JORDAN AND WADE!!
#2 Doubles - The team of junior Drew Sullivan and sophomore Jeremy Seiler struggled to get going early as they lost to eventual tournament runner-up Knox in the first round. But, it didn't take long for them to find their stride in their next match as they went on to destroy their opponents the rest of the day...beating Griffith (8-2) and then Whitko (8-0). GREAT 4th PLACE FINISH DREW AND JEREMY!!
