Varsity Eagle Tennis...Strong 2nd Place at Knox

September 16, 2012
By Brent Byler of Fremont High School

The Fremont Varsity Tennis Team traveled to Knox on Saturday and battled throughout the day at all positions to finish a strong 2nd overall.  Leading the way for the Eagles were seniors Glen McClain and Brandon Miller, who WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP at #1 doubles.  They outlasted solid opponents in Knox (6-2, 7-5) and Wabash (6-4, 7-6) in the first 2 rounds to work their way to the 1st place match.  In the final, they played great individually and as a duo to DOMINATE Hobart (6-1, 6-3) and earn their team 12 points.  Way to go CHAMPS!!!

The #2 doubles team of Tanner Frye and Mason Kolberg won their first round match over Griffith (6-2, 6-1), but then lost to Tippaconoe Valley in the semifinal (6-3, 7-5).  They could have hung their heads after not making it to the final, but in the 3rd place match Tanner and Mason stepped up and played inspired tennis to defeat Northwestern (6-7, 6-4, 10-6) and earn 6 points for their teammates.  Nice work Tanner and Mason, way to battle back in some tough situations!!

At #1 singles, Tyler Jenkins took an 8-5 record into matchplay Saturday as he also looked to win a championship.  After an unfortunate draw, Tyler lost to Wabash #1 singles and eventual tournament champion (6-0, 6-1).  Tyler didn't let this bring him down as he struck early and often with smart serve placement, big groundstrokes, and great net play to defeat Hobart (8-5) and then Northwestern (8-5).  With those 2 wins, Tyler finished 4th on the day and earned his team 5 points.  Awesome job Tyler, 2-1 on the day at the toughest position!

Lone varsity freshman, Logan Miller was moved up to #2 singles for the 1st time this season and made huge improvements and adjustments throughout the day to finish 4th.  Logan lost 1st round in a tough match to Hobart (6-1, 6-3), but ended strong beating Tippaconoe Valley (8-4) and Whitko (8-5) to earn his team 5 points.  Great day of tennis fab-frosh Logan!!

Keith Bookwalter saw his 1st singles play for the varsity team as he competed at #3 singles and played very well.  Keith lost a heartbreaker in the 1st round to Tippaconoe Valley (3-6, 6-3, 10-5), but battled back to smash Hobart (8-3) and then Griffith (8-3) and place 4th on the day.  With his strong finish, Keith gained the team 5 points.

The Eagles earned 33 points on the day and placed 2nd out of 8 for the second year in a row.  CONGRATULATIONS ON A STRONG 2nd PLACE FINISH!!!  What a great way to enter NECC tourney week...let's keep rolling EAGLES!

The Eagles host PH, their final conference match of the season Monday at 4:45 pm.
