Home » Baseball NewsEagles Put One Together Against GarrettMay 14, 2012 By Justin Bock of Fremont High SchoolFremont 6, Garrett 1 Any win is a nice win, but they seem so much sweeter when the seniors all get the job done. This game also was the first in some time where all three facets of the game were solid. The victory starts with the pitching performance. Let's face it: Tanner isn't exactly throwing smoke up to the plate. He probably tops out somewhere in the upper 60s (like the weather around here the last month). But he makes up for his lack of velocity by using his brain: he hits locations and just when the hitter thinks he's seen Tanner's slowest pitch, Tanner throws one even slower and makes the hitter look foolish. TWall threw a complete game against a good-hitting Garret team, allowing 7 hits, striking out 4, and walking just one batter. Two other seniors led the way offensively. Matt Hoff had three hits and Andrew Smith (playing 1B for the first time -- more on that later) had two hits, including a bases-loaded double in the seventh that broke the game open. Tanner also contributed a single and an RBI sac-fly. Brock Baker and Jake Bryant also had two hits apiece. Jake stole his conference-leading 27th base of the year. He is just 6 off of the all-time mark of 33 set by Corbin Parker in 2008. Andrew was playing first because Kaleb Hayes used his eyebrow to stop a ground ball in pregame. The last second injury meant Smitty had to play first and Brock played third for the first time in a varsity game. David Schmucker entered in left field. All three played very well defensively. I am just glad the whooping or monkey sounds or whatever were shut down (those of you there know what I mean). The Eagles finish their conference schedule this week with home games against West Noble on Tuesday and Prairie Heights on Thursday.
