Eagles 6-2 in the NECC

May 10, 2012
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Fremont 5, Lakeland 2

Baseball is easy when a team does three things: puts the ball in play hard, makes all routing defensive plays, and throws strikes. We did those things as well in one game as we have in the past three weeks.

The pitching we got from Glen (4-1) was fantastic. He struck out 7 and walked 4 while throwing a complete game. Lakeland scored two runs because the two hits he allowed were in the same inning as three of his four walks. In the other six innings he only allowed one baserunner (a walk -- and the next hitter grounded into a 4-6-3 smooth double play). I do have to mention that Coach Robinson about came unglued when the Lakers, down 5-0 at the time, broke up the no-no with a two-out bunt single in the sixth. Bunting in that situation breaks the unwritten rules of baseball, and precariously tempts the wrath of the baseball gods.

Offensively, we hit a lot of balls hard at people, but hey, that's part of the game. We started finding some gaps in the fifth inning. Kaleb Hayes led off with a double and Jake Bryant followed with a single. After an out at the plate, Mitch Van Zuilen hit a sac fly to score Bryant. With two outs, McClain doubled Matt Hoff home, Andrew Smith walked, and Brock Baker doubled both McClain and Smith home. Good inning. Bryant was the only Eagle with two hits.

I have to mention (unfortunately we don't have accompanying video) the web gems turned in by Smith, Bryant, and Hoff. Andrew made a diving stop at third and threw his guy out by a few steps. Jake made a run-saving diving stop up the middle at SS. And in the seventh, Hoff made a running /tumbling catch of a curving line drive. The defense was fun to watch.
