Valiant Effort Falls Short At DeKalb

April 24, 2012
By Brent Byler of Fremont High School

The Fremont Girls tennis teams were once again on the road Tuesday night, traveling to DeKalb to take on the 21-consecutive sectional champion Barons.

After losing in a tough NECC match last night to West Noble on the road, Coach Byler was curious to see how the team would bounce back.  And he was not disappointed as each girl took it upon herself to fight "tooth and nail" for every point in every game.  At number 1 singles, Lexi Skeens showed her entire arsenal as she place the ball brilliantly around the court.  Lexi used every inch of the court to try and force her Baron foe to play difficult shots and was quite successful.  After losing the 1st set 6-4, Lexi hit her stride and took a 4-3 lead in the 2nd set, only to see her opponent fight back with every thing she had and steal away the final set 6-4.  At #2 and #3 singles, Morgan Conti and Ashton Taner respectively, pushed their oppenents around the court and played some much improved tennis as well, but couldn't sustain leads.  Morgan was defeated 6-3, 6-4 and Ashton 6-2, 6-1.  Even though Morgan and Ashton lost their matches, they worked hard to adjust their games as they improved their use of court positiong, shot location, and singles strategy.

Both Eagles doubles teams certainly earned alot of respect from DeKalb and the Fremont Coaches as well as they took their host teams to 3 sets each.  At #1 doubles, Saige Driver and Kasey Renfrew served well and added some amazing shots at the net and from the baseline to take a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win.  This makes 2 nights in a row that this doubles team has pulled out victories.  At #2 doubles, Anna Thompson and Itzel Sanchez paired up for the 1st time this season as they attacked the net with a full head of steam and made huge improvements in their doubles positioning and communication.  Although they lost the tightest match of the night in a 3rd set tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6)), their attitudes never faltered and their net aggression never relented.  What a great match!     (Eagles Overall Record 2-6)  (NECC 2-1)

On the Junior Varsity courts, the Eagles played right with their opponents in most matches, but the only victor was Riley McCrea at #1 singles as she bested her DeKalb foe 8-6.   (Eagles JV Overall Record 3-2) (NECC 3-0)

The JV plays at Howe Wednesday.
