Fremont Wins at Parkview

April 14, 2012
By Justin Bock of Fremont High School

Fremont 15, Churubusco 5

For those fans (and there were many) who claimed that the cold weather was going to keep them away from Parkview Wednesday night: You missed a BEAUTIFUL NIGHT and an awesome Fremont victory in what proves to be the last time Fremont will play at Parkview [editor's note: Parkview has chosen to stop hosting high school teams on the field].

While things got close with one ugly defensive inning and 11 walks issued by our pitchers, our sticks and base running were too much for the other Eagles to overcome. Fremont had 14 hits and stole 7 bases in route to a 6-inning mercy rule game. The lower half of the lineup played their best game of the year. Mitch Van Zuilen went 2-4, with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases, Tanner Wall went 2-3 with 3 RBIs, Kaleb Hayes went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and Alex Beams (offensive first star -- for you hockey fans) went 3-4 with 3 runs, 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Everyone had great plate appearances, but a team becomes truly dangerous when the entire lineup produces.

With Glen McClain struggling to hone in, Tanner Wall came in to relieve Glen in the fourth and threw superbly. He earned the win, throwing 2.2 innings, striking out 4 and allowing only 1 hit -- a soft blooper into center.

David Schmucker got his first varsity hit, driving in the 15th run of the game with a sharp double to left-center. He becomes the third Eagle to get their first varsity hits. He joins Brady Elliott and Tanner Wall.

Thanks for those of you who braved this rather pleasant, windless night to cheer us on. Tommorow night we seek our third straight conference win.
