The Eagles' season ends too early

March 3, 2012
By Andrew Arndt of Fremont High School

The varsity boys' basketball team headed into the Sectional Tournament with an ideal draw.  The team was in the bye round and were set to play the two weakest teams in either Prairie Heights or Bremen.  Everything looked like another showdown against the host Westview Warriors was inevitable.  However, the Bremen Lions had something to say about that and it was clear they were ready to play against the favored Fremont Eagles.  The game began with a couple early turnovers and several close misses and even with that the Eagles had a five point lead at the break at 30 to 25.  The start of the second half was a good one as the Eagles took a 10 point lead with a five point run. Unfortunately for the Eagles the rest of the game was downhill as Bremen got great looks and forced the Eagles to shoot from the outside and ended with a 49 to 24 run as the final tally was 74-59. Although the loss, which is the program's sixth consecutive first game loss in Sectionals, is a tough one to take the success of this year's team can't be overshadowed by one game. This team had one of the best season's in the histroy of Fremont and had the best record since the 1996-97 season. The team also became the only one to ever win the NECC League Title outright.  The coaches would like to thank the seniors and their parents for all of the support that they've given the program over the years.  This loss should hurt for a time, but Wednesday's awards program needs to be a celebratory event because the season was a tramendous one.
