After a drizzly, rainy, wet Wednesday, the cross country teams were expecting rain again on Thursday for their Kadet Invitational at Air Academy. Luckily, the skies cleared up on Thursday and we had beautiful weather for racing.
The boys ran first and were led by sophomore Dominic Carrese (Colorado Springs), who won the 3.1 mile race in a time of 18:04. Carrese had a 10-second lead at two miles and ended up winning the race by an impressive 32 seconds. Junior captain Jeff Brabec ran a strong race finishing in 19:31, and was the Danes' second finisher. Senior captain Zack Eberhart (Colorado Springs) finished in 21:08. Other FVS finishers were Tyler Martin (Colorado Springs) in 23:30, Justice Taylor (Dulles, Va.) in 25:16 and Austin Krug (Colorado Springs) in 25:48.
The girls ran second and each girl ran very well as they circled the Air Academy campus. Senior Gabby Campbell was the Danes' first finisher with a time of 28:32. Campbell reached a goal and was all smiles after the race. Junior Ellie Taylor (Colorado Springs), who ran her second-ever cross country race, was just behind Campbell and finished in 28:40. Cassie Howard (Denver) finished her race in 30:37. Freshman Greer Hill (Santa Fe, N.M.) competed in the race although she had not practiced all week due to shin splints. She went on to finish in 32:38, which was a five-minute improvement on her best time.
The coaching staff is very proud of these kids for all their hard work in practice and their effort in the race.
