Danes Come Up Short Against Kodiaks
January 29, 2012Fountain Valley School
The Danes came out a bit sluggish Thursday night at Colorado Springs School and were outscored 12-4 in the first quarter en route to a 14-point loss.
Delia Brekken won a fabulous tip and got the ball to Clare Hamilton who immediately turned to the basket and laid in the first two points of the game. The Danes started in a man-to-man defense that looked pretty solid. But the Kodiaks were able to knock down shots around the field. FVS picked up a few fouls early and had to adjust its game.
In the second quarter, the Danes' scoring pace picked up. Heather Whitham did a great job of drawing the defense outward before dishing the ball inside to Brekken. Hamilton also executed a couple of her signature slashing moves to the basket to net four points. Bailey Knecht did a great job of getting her hands in the passing lanes. She continues to rack up steals on the season, collecting a total of five tonight.
The Danes avoided their traditional third-quarter slump and actually played their best basketball in the third stanza. Brekken was absolutely solid inside the paint. Vicky Wang came off the bench to offer solid minutes in the third before scoring a bucket in the fourth. Knecht hit two smooth jumpers from about 10 feet out.
In the fourth quarter, the Danes, who had been down as many as 18 points, cut the Kodiaks' lead to within six. The momentum shifted, and the Danes tried to take advantage by jumping into a full-court press. They made two consecutive stops, but in a series of scrambles and loose balls, the Kodiaks managed to come up with possession and extended their lead to 12 in short order. With less than two minutes on the clock, the Danes put up two three-pointers, but neither fell. Final score in the game was 53-39.
The Danes committed 20 turnovers. Top scoring honors went to Brekken with a decisive double-double: 18 points and 18 rebounds. She also had two assists, two blocks and two steals. Knecht scored eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and five steals. Hamilton had six points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Whitham had a standout game, with five points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals. Ellie Taylor had two rebounds. Wang had two points and one block. Rina Onishi and Ji Won Park provided valuable minutes from the bench. Please note, we will not have practice tomorrow (Friday). The day buses run at 3:30pm so all day student players will be able to ride the bus home. The next time we will practice will be on Tuesday, and we have the early practice time slot. Happy Long Winter Weekend! Hopefully everyone will have the opportunity to relax and rest up. GO DANES!
