Danes Say Goodbye to Eight Seniors with Resounding Victory
January 26, 2012Fountain Valley School
The Danes celebrated the last home meet of their eight senior swimmers tonight: captains Morgan McCurdy, Lulu Maher and Alanna Erickson. They were joined by Hannah Carrese (four-year stalwart!), Taylor Fortenberry, Haley Crowell, Jana Kleemeier and morning Sswim captain Sarah Bir.
All of these girls have displayed the commitment to their team to finish their senior season strong, and they have set a great example for the younger swimmers and divers. Before the meet, the girls and coaches gathered in the locker room and chatted about things, and there were a more than a few teary eyes, including the head coach! The coaches stressed the importance of finishing what they started, and these ladies were great examples of that philosophy during their time in the program. The team went out and made their last home swims have great meaning.
"Hopefully, long after the swimming is forgotten, these more important lessons will linger in our memories," head coach Rob Gustke said.
As for the meet, the coaches tried out some combinations for leagues and learned some interesting things that they will practice with the remainder of the week.
The “Breadwinner Award” was given to three swimmers tonight: Lidia Chalova '15 for her first-ever swim of the 200 IM, junior Sihan Wang '13 for her continued improvement in the 100 breast (four seconds dropped in the last two weeks) and Hannah Pratt '14 for an awesome swim of 1:18 in the 100 fly.
These were but a few of the many great efforts.
The team is swimming well, and they are challenging each other to not be satisfied with where they are, but to look forward to what they can still attain. Kent Denver and Manitou are very strong teams, as well as Salida and St. Mary’s Academy, with Colorado Academy being somewhat of an unknown.
