Danes Lack of Depth Keeps Them Running in Loss
January 23, 2012Fountain Valley School
The Danes struggled against the 8-1 Eagles, who made everything they put up from inside and outside, and even a half-court shot at the end of the third quarter (though it didn't count). The Danes did hold them to less than their average points per game (65.9) and worked exceptionally hard in a very physical, very fast-paced game.
Delia Brekken won the tip, as she often does, and got the ball to Kim Donaldson, who immediately scored on a layup. But the early lead soon evaporated as the Eagles proved adept at picking apart a 3-2 zone defense. The Danes were buoyed by a three-pointer from Bailey Knecht, but the Eagles answered right back with a bucket and the foul. Donaldson scored four in the first stanza and Knecht scored three. The Danes were outscored 15-7.
The Danes struggled to break the full-court press in the second quarter and repeated turnovers interrupted their offensive efforts. The Eagles began subbing to get fresh legs in the game and continued to push the pace on offense and defense. Brekken did a great job of handling the ball against the press, as did Knecht and Clare Hamilton. Hamilton was constantly on the lookout for open teammates and initiated several impressive passes.
In the third quarter, the Danes turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions. The Eagles continued their successful offensive efforts against the Danes' zone and man defenses. While the Danes outrebounded the Eagles, they couldn't find the bottom of the net often enough to make it count.
The fourth quarter found the scoring nearly even at 10-11 points. The Danes' lack of subs was evident, as the players struggled to deny passes and prevent cutters through the lane. Brekken scored six points and Hamilton scored four on back-to-back layups, one from a steal and one on an assist from Knecht. The team committed 34 turnovers. Brekken had 10 points and 14 rebounds to record yet another double-double this season. Hamilton had six points, five steals and two rebounds. Donaldson had six points, six rebounds, one steal and one block. Knecht had three points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. While they did not score in the game, the Danes saw crucial minutes on the court from Rina Onishi, Vicky Wang, Ji Won Park and Heather Whitham.
The Danes will get one night to rest before they face Vanguard away tomorrow. Vanguard handed ECA its only loss so far this season, so tomorrow's game will be another big challenge for the Danes.
