Peyton's Press Overwhelms the Danes
January 21, 2012Fountain Valley School
Although the Danes showed an elevated level of play in the first half, they couldn't hold on as Peyton finally downed the Danes by almost 30 points.
FVS held Peyton scoreless for nearly four minutes to start the game and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Danes faded in the second half just as Peyton started to hit from the field. That combination meant the final score (33-60) looks lopsided, but it doesn't really reflect the game. The Danes outscored Peyton 12-5 in the first quarter and took a three-point deficit into the locker room at halftime. In the third quarter, Peyton hit three 3-pointers and followed with an additional three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. A tired Danes team couldn't prevent the downtown shots and eventually fell further behind.
FVS lost the tip, but then made three defensive stops in a row. Delia Brekken had the offensive game of her season and she was relentless on the offensive and defensive boards. Brekken is exhibiting phenomenal body control and outstanding effort throughout the games. Her "twin tower" in the paint is Kim Donaldson, who likewise worked exceptionally hard tonight. These two players carried the weight of the game on their shoulders as they out sized every Peyton player. Heather Whitham and Ellie Taylor stepped up to take on similar tasks as they entered the game. All four are embracing their work in the post.
On the perimeter, Clare Hamilton and Bailey Knecht had some serious jobs tonight. Peyton played a tight, punishing man defense throughout the game. Their hands were everywhere, and Hamilton and Knecht did a nice job of keeping their composure under considerable pressure. Peyton brings one of the most aggressive man defenses the Danes will face this season. Rina Onishi and Ji Won Park are providing outstanding support from the bench. Onishi's athleticism and Park's fierce defense are tremendous helps to the team. There are a small number of girls on the roster this year, and so the Danes will always face third- and fourth-quarter challenges as they play against fresher legs. But the girls are committed to improving their fitness and they have been doing a good job of playing clean so that no one fouls out of a game.=
The team had six assists and five steals tonight but committed a total of 22 turnovers. Brekken led the team in scoring with 14 points. She notched another double-double with 16 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Another double-double went to Donaldson with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor had three points and five rebounds. Hamilton had two points and three rebounds. Knecht had one point, three rebounds and one steal.
