MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - The Iowa Central women’s cross country team started its season Saturday at the ICCAC Region XI Time Trial with a team victory and swept the top three individual places.
Sophomore Fiona McKenna led the way winning the race in 19:53.73. Fellow sophomores Jodi Miller, and Ebeissa Nyandwi finished second and third respectively.
The women won with 18 points and had five athletes finish in the top 10 and nine in the top 20.
The women’s team returns eight sophomores and our NJCAA All-Americans from the 2011 squad that won National Championships in both cross country and the half marathon.
The women also add four freshmen to the team, which include two local student-athletes in Stephanie Herrington (Eagle Grove High School) and Tara Jackson (Fort Dodge Senior High). Sophomore, Zach Bellingtier (Fort Dodge Senior High) is a member of the men’s squad.
The men also began their season on Saturday at the ICCAC Region XI Time Trial.
The men were led by freshman Andrew Costello who finished third in the 5k race in 16:23.
The men finished third overall in the team point total with 62 points, with six men finishing in the top 20.
The men’s team returns 10 sophomores from a National Championship Half-Marathon team and three All-Americans.
The Tritons also welcome 11 freshmen and one transfer for the 2012 season.
“I was very pleased with the outcome of our time trial today,” Iowa Central head coach Dee Brown said. “Both teams have been working very hard these past three weeks. We knew we would be tired today and treated this like another hard day at practice. It was a great assessment of where we are at right now.”
Next up for Iowa Central is the Dutch Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 1, hosted by Central College in Pella.
