FORT DODGE - After decades as the on-campus home of Iowa Central softball, Triton Field’s days are running out. Construction will begin in May to transform it from a softball field to a new state-of-the-art cafeteria, which will open in 2013.
To Triton Field, Iowa Central is calling all former players, coaches and fans to attend a field send-off celebration on Saturday, April 28. The send-off will coincide with Iowa Central’s ICCAC doubleheader against Kirkwood at 1:00 p.m. Before the opening game, Iowa Central will have former coaches throw out the “last pitch.†Between games all former players in attendance will be honored and after the games will be a cookout at the field.
“This has been a great home for us and we hate to lose it. We knew with the growth we are having that we were in a prime location and it would be long before it was redeveloped,†said head coach Josh Sandin. “We want as many people to come back and see the field off before it gets torn up. It should be a great day.â€
Since 2006 Iowa Central is 83-19 at Triton Field. Triton Field also hosted the 2009 District F Championship which saw Iowa Central punch its first and only trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.
“We have had a definite home-field advantage since I’ve been here,†said Sandin. “It’s one of the nicest fields in the area. Every time someone comes here they comment on the field. Hopefully we still have a few more memories to host on it before they tear it up.â€
The final game at Triton Field will be Monday, April 30, against Ellsworth at 3:00 p.m.
