Rangers win home opener!

December 3, 2012
By Jen Wagner of Forest Lake Girls Basketball

The energy was spilling throughout the gym Tuesday night in anticipation for the season and home opener for the Forest Lake Rangers.  Crunch made his annual visit firing up the fans, player and even the officials.  The ceremony celebrating the 10,000 shot club recipients was all that remained before tip-off and the start of the 2012/13 season.  The visiting Huskies of Andover started the game with pressure resulting in an early lead.  Within the first five minutes the Rangers settled in using their depth and experience to gain and hold the lead for remainder of the game winning 73-48.  Led by the 26 points of junior forward Bailey Norby and balance scoring from the other leaders including Angie Frericks and Anna Eckert the Rangers build a sizable double digit lead going into half time.  The Huskies are known for being a streaky shooting team and it showed as they made a run mid way through the second half closing the lead by the Rangers to just 10 points.  The Ranger team was just too much for the visitors as poise, patience and experience by Forest Lake closed out this night with an important first game victory.  Next up, Mahtomedi visits Forest Lake on Friday.

Forest Lake JV started the season in an exciting fashion!  The game came down to the last few minutes where we were able to pull ahead 55-52 for a victory over Andover.  This conclusion of the game was due to the player's continued focus on our team's goals for the game.  The girls turned on the full court pressure and were able to force Andover to make mistakes and then take advantage of them.   There are many areas for improvement but that is what a first game is for, to show us coaches what we need to focus on as the season progresses.  Our thought provoking question for the game was, "what is going to be your reaction when you or a teammate makes a mistake?"  Our team showed that our response was going to be to learn from it and move on.  Great start to the season girls!!

Forest Lake sophomore basketball played its season and home opener on Tuesday night losing to Andover 44-30.  This year’s team has great balance, size and speed, according to Coach Keller.  He is working with the young squad developing offensive and defensive game plans that complement that strengths of this team.  “Our success on either side of the floor is to control the paint, attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line at least 20 time per game.” Coach Keller says.   Against Andover this plan was working as Rangers found their way to the line 22 times, but could not balance that success as a low field goal shooting percentage would prove to be the difference in the game.  The Huskies would build a lead and the Ranger would fight back to tie on more than one occasion.  Forced to play with increased full court pressure late in the game, the Huskies found success in breaking the press for easy layups stretching the lead and closing out the game.  The Rangers return to the court on Friday with plans for their first win of the season.
