Rangers win over Cretin-Derham Hall!

February 5, 2012
By Jen Wagner of Forest Lake Girls Basketball

Forest Lake rallies late in the second half of Friday’s contest to beat Cretin 50-48.  The Rangers jumped off to an early lead using full court pressure to force the visiting Raiders  into turnovers and easy baskets.  The tempo slowed as Cretin made adjustments and closed the gap only to take their first lead at half.  The game plan changed as the visiting Raiders continued with a slowed down tempo looking to create opportunities from mid range which lead to a nine point lead deep into the second half.  The Rangers remained poised turning to their strength, inside post touches led by Bailey Norby’s 17 points, to erode the deficit and regain the lead with three minutes left.  The Raiders were not done as they tied the game with less than a minute left to play.  Coach Wagner mapped a plan during a timeout which was perfectly executed leading to a layup opportunity and foul.  Emily Peters broke the lead making the front end of her pair of shots which proved to be the difference in the game.  Next up, the Rangers travel to Park for a Friday rematch.

The Forest Lake sophomore team runs into a streaky shooting Cretin team losing 58-44 on Friday night.  The Rangers jumped right after the visiting Raiders taking a quick seven point lead until number 14 of Cretin started a string of 5 straight three point shots to launch them into a quick double digit lead.  The Rangers game plan called for stopping high percentage shots and this was a success.  Yet, the visiting Raiders remained focused on what was working finishing the night with 30 points from three point range. “I have never played against a team with this level of accuracy and confidence from that range especially at this level”, Coach Keller commented after the game.  Forest Lake remained scrappy and kept pace matching with inside play and success at the free throw line resulting in season high point total.    Leading the offensive attack for Forest Lake were sophomores Taylor Shortly and Chelsie Bethke with 33 of the Ranger points.  Next game will be Friday, February 10 against Park.
