Earl Wolff Selected to Pre-Season All ACC

July 27, 2012
Hoke County High School

Hoke County High School alumni Earl Wolff led a contingent of eight players from in-state programs named to the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason team Wednesday.

Wolff, a senior at N.C. State, received 30 votes to land one of the safety spots along with Lamarcus Joyner from Florida State. Joyner led the balloting at the safety position with 45.

The 6-foot, 201-pounder Wolff is entering his second season as a starter. He ranked second among Wolfpack tacklers in 2011 with 113. Wolff has already earned his undergraduate degree at N.C. State in sports management.

Joining Wolff on the first-team defense is junior cornerback David Amerson, who set an ACC single-season record and led the nation with 13 interceptions last season.

North Carolina tied with Florida State and Clemson by placing four players on the All-ACC preseason team.

Tar Heel offensive tackle James Hurst and offensive guard Jonathan Cooper along with running back Gio Bernard were selected on offense. Hurst and Cooper were both second-team All-ACC choices last season, while Bernard was a first-team pick. Senior linebacker Kevin Reddick made the defensive team.

Duke and Wake Forest had one player each selected.

Conner Vernon, a second-team All-ACC pick in 2011 for the Blue Devils, was named to the first team.

Defensive lineman Nikita Whitlock represented the Demon Deacons. Whitlock was as second-team choice last season after registering 14 tackles for loss.

Balloting for the preseason squad was conducted during the annual ACC Football Kickoff on Sunday and Monday in Greensboro.
