Home » Boys' Tennis NewsWildcat Tennis Team Takes First StepMay 9, 2012 By Tom Mayer of Eureka High School - TennisThe Eureka boys tennis team, after receiving a first round bye, moved on to the next round of Team District competition on a winner--Collin Mayer's sharp, slice backhand volley to the feet of his opponents. Mayer and Andy Schmid won their match 6-2, 6-0 with that shot, and the team walked away with a 5-2 victory. The rules for post season team play in Missouri call for all matches to end as soon as one team attains that fifth victory. On Tuesday, the fans watched as all three Eureka doubles teams were trying to settle matters. While the Huang brothers and Varner/Pieper were fighting out close matches, Mayer and Schmid put a fairly quick and easy end to the match with their win at the #2 doubles flight. Four Wildcats won their singles matches: Collin Mayer at #2 over Jack Harris 6-0, 6-3; Michael Huang at #3 over Alex Winter 6-0, 6-0; Andy Schmid at #4 over Kevin Shi 6-2, 6-3; Corey Pieper at #6 over Karan Mathur 6-2, 7-5. Top seeds get home court advantage throughout the tournament, so the #1 seeded Wildcats will likely play Lafayette Wednesday afternoon at the Eureka High School tennis courts. Although Coach Conley's team defeated Lafayette earlier in the season, he encouraged his Wildcat team to come to the courts prepared for what might be their toughest test of the season to date. Go Cats!
