Schartz Places Second in Writing Contest

Kayla Schartz, recent Ellinwood High School graduate, placed 2nd in the Kansas Book Festival Youth Writing Contest.  She won $250 for her 850-word essay on the topic "My Kansas Shoes Were Made for Walking."  The contest was sponsored by the public television station KTWU and by Payless Shoe Source.

A student of Julie Ann Jacobs, Schartz wrote the essay as part of her College Advantage English Composition class offered for dual credit through Ellinwood High School and Barton Community College.

Schartz will attend the University of Kansas this fall.
