Detroit Tigers Bullpen Not Keeping Its Bargain

On one hand, you have to wonder why a team with one of the highest payrolls in baseball the last few years is seemingly unable to solidify its bullpen. Given that only a small share of a team's payroll is usually dedicated to the bullpen, it seemingly shouldn't be too hard for a team with a lot of financial resources to bring in quality bullpen arms.

On the other hand, you have to feel a bit bad for Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers' General Manager. His team's inability to produce a strong bullpen hasn't been for a lack of trying.  This year he brought in both Joe Nathan and Joba Chamberlain (Nathan was thought to be more of the sure thing while Chamberlain was something of a “flyer”; however Chamberlain has performed much better so far this year). After the bullpen wasn't producing this year he paid a premium for Joakim Soria and promptly got hurt, and even took a flyer on Jim Johnson (fans aren't expecting much).
