1936 The USA basketball team defeated Canada 19-8 to win the Gold Medal in the Olympics. It marked the first year that basketball was put in as an Olympic event.
1959 The American Football League was announced in Chicago.
1971 St. Louis Cardinals Bob Gibson twirled a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 11-0.
1974 The NFL Players Association ended its seven-week strike.
1977 The New York Cosmos, with star Pele, played before 77,961 fans at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, the largest crowd ever to witness a soccer game in the United States.
1977 Lanny Watkins beat Gene Littler on the third hole of sudden death to win the PGA Championship.
1979 Chicago Cubs pitcher Dennis Lamp had the distinction of serving up St. Louis Cardinals OF Lou Brock his 3,000th hit, an infield single.
1982 Philadelphia's Pete Rose eclipsed Hank Aaron's major league record for at bats with the 12,365th when he came to the plate in the first inning of the Phillies 15-11 win over the Montreal Expos.
1987 Mark McGwire established a rookie record with his 39th home run of the season as the Oakland Athletics edged the California Angels, 7-6, in 12 innings.
1996 Broadcaster Tom Mees, an original member of the ESPN Sports Center, was found dead in a swimming pool of an apparent drowning.
1999 Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese, a former captain of the Brooklyn Dodgers, passed away. He was 81.
2003 A major power outage in the northeast forced a number of postponements in sports, including the scheduled baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets at Shea Stadium. WNBA games in New York and Cleveland were also postponed.
2004 Chinese shooter Du Li won the first gold medal at the Athens Olympics when she captured the women's 10-meter air rifle competition; American swimmer Michael Phelps won the men's 400 meter individual medley in a world record time of 4:08.26.
2007 Yankees Hall of Famer and legendary broadcaster Phil Rizzuto passed away. He was 89 years old.
2008 China's Yang Wei earned gold in the individual all-around competition of men's gymnastics at the Olympics.
2009 The New York Giants signed QB Eli Manning to a six-year contract extension.
2011 Keegan Bradley defeated Jason Dufner in a playoff to earn his first major title at the 93rd PGA Championship.
2013 The Minnesota Timberwolves re-signed center Nikola Pekovic to a five-year contract worth $60 million.
2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli announced her retirement, citing constant pain in her body.
