Virginia Tech Hokies (2000 - Pres)

Virginia Tech football hasn’t been the same over the last two years winning only 15 games combined. That’s concern after the Hokies had eight consecutive years with 10 wins or more. If Virginia Tech is to get back to 10 wins this season, they will have to find a way to solve the quarterback situation and stabilize the offensive line.

Junior Michael Brewer will be the starting quarterback with sophomore Brenden Motley and fifth-year senior Mark Leal looking to compete for the backup spot. Brewer is a transfer from Texas Tech and is coming off a back injury that forced him to miss the first month of the season. Brewer graduated in May, but still last two years of eligibility. The one big issue for all three quarterbacks is their lack of varsity action and how they will respond under pressure situations.

The running game is in good shape with sophomore Trey Edmunds and sophomore Sam Rogers looking to start at halfback and fullback respectively with JC Coleman looking to get time as well this season. The receiving corps is strong behind Dimitri Knowles and Josh Standford. Junior Ryan Malleck will take over as the starting tight end. Three starters return on the line including right tackle Laurence Gibson, center Caleb Ferris and left tackle Jonathan McLaughlin. Wyatt Teller is expected to take over at left guard with Augie Conte starting it right guard.

Virginia Tech’s defense was solid last year giving up only 19.3 points per game which ranked 11th in the country, 172.7 yards passing which ranked eighth overall and 283.6 yards of total offense which ranked fourth in the nation. Only for starters return from a physical, stingy defense and that is a concern. Coordinator Bud Foster always seems to find the right mix on defense and will count on defensive tackle Luther Maddy and defensive lineman Corey Marshall, who is coming back from a suspension, to make things strong up the middle. Junior DE Dadi Nicholas is expected to be a force from his and position after posting seven tackles for loss and four sacks in a backup role. Maddy posted 13 ½ tackles for loss and 6 ½ sacks last season. All three linebackers will be new including senior Chase Williams, Deon Clark and Ronnie Vandyke. One strength of the defense could be the secondary with returning starters Kendall Fuller, Detrick Bonner and Kyshoen Jarrett. Brandon Facyson will step in at one corner after returning from an injury plagued 2013. Virginia Tech’s secondary was ranked eighth in the country in 2013.

If quarterback Michael Brewer is unable to separate himself in camp than Virginia Tech will have a huge issue going into the season. The line has experience but they have lacked consistency and cohesiveness to make the running game more effective. As usual, the defense should be one of the better in the ACC despite returning only for starters. Virginia Tech will find out where they are in the second game of the season when they traveled to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes on September 6.
