Cleveland Browns (2003 - Pres)

The Cleveland Browns and their fans have been through a lot over the last decade including a lack of leadership at all levels, coaching changes, QB issues and a very difficult division. The good news for the Browns is there is enough talent to be competitive. The bad news is the QB situation. There is no proven signal-caller with Brian Hoyer and rookie Johnny Manziel battling it out in camp. There will be some pressure to play Maziel because Cleveland fans are looking for some excitement and a chance to win early.

Cleveland’s offense and its production will depend a lot on Josh Gordon (87 receptions, 1,646 yards 9 TD’s, 18.9 ypc), the NFL’s most productive receiver, and his chances on playing this season. Gordon is facing a season-long suspension for another violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. If Gordon doesn’t play, the Browns don’t have anyone close to his talent waiting in the wings. Miles Austin, Nate Burleson, Earl Bennett and Andrew Hawkins form a solid receiving corps but nothing close to Gordon. TE Jordon Cameron had a Pro Bowl season in 2013 with 80 catches for 917 yards and 7 TD’s.

No matter who will be the QB, the Browns want to establish a solid running game with veteran Ben Tate (free agent-Houston) and rookie Terrance West (Towson). If Tate is to be the feature RB, he must find a way to stay healthy. The Browns finished 27th in the league in rushing in 2013.

In order to run the football effectively, Cleveland must do something about their offensive line. LT Joe Thomas and C Alex Mack are solid but there are areas of concern with LG John Greco, RT Mitchell Schwartz and rookie Joel Bitonio (Nevada) at RG. If Manziel is to start at QB, the Browns must have a strong OL and a solid running game.

The Browns defense should be solid in their front seven and up the middle. Cleveland signed free agent LB Karlos Dansby (Arizona) and S Donte Whitner (San Francisco) to make this defense more aggressive. With the offense trying to find itself, the strength has to be the defense. Cleveland will count on DE’s Ahtyba Rubib and Desmond Bryant and DT Phil Taylor.

The linebackers will be solid with Dansby, OLB Paul Kruger, rookie ILB Christian Kirksey (Iowa) and OLB Jabaal Sheard. There is plenty of depth in the front seven with DE John Hughes, DE Billy Winn, DT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, OLB Barkevious Mingo, ILB Darius Eubanks, ILB Craig Robertson and OLB Quentin Groves. Cleveland needs more production from Taylor and Kruger after both signed big contracts.

The secondary will be led by Joe Haden, who signed a big contract in the off-season. Haden has become one of the top corners in the NFL and most QB’s won’t challenge him. The Browns upgraded the secondary by drafting Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert who will start from the get-go. Gilbert is big and physical and is a ball hawk. CB Pierre Desir was drafted in the fourth round to provide depth. Donte Whitner will start at SS and Tashaun Gipson will start at FS. The back-ups will be CB Buster Skrine, SS Johnson Badermosi and FS Jordan Poyer.

The Browns are basically starting over again but there is reason to be optimistic. There is talent on defense but too many questions on offense. If Gordon isn’t back, Cleveland will struggle. If they can run the football and stop the run, the Browns will have a chance to be a better football team. Playing in the AFC North won’t help, but with a little luck, progress could be made in 2014.
