 Arkansas Razorbacks (2014 - Pres)

Coach Bret Bielema’s first season at Arkansas was anything but successful. The Razorbacks finished 0-8 in league play and 3-9 overall. Those numbers aren’t acceptable to the Arkansas faithful. So what’s in store for the Razorbacks in 2014? Plenty of running backs, a good offensive line and an improving defense.

The three-headed running attack will feature TB’s Alex Collins (2013 SEC Freshman of the Year), Jonathan Williams and Korliss Marshall. Williams is considered the team’s most complete RB, while Marshall may have the best speed on the team. QB Brandon Allen played the last eight games of 2013 with a shoulder injury and should be a much better signal-caller in 2014. One area Allen must improve is accuracy (Allen completed less than 50% of his passes). The best returning receiver will be sophomore TE Hunter Henry, a 2nd team All-SEC performer. Arkansas will count on true freshman WR Jared Cornelius and JC transfer Cody Hollister. Keon Hatcher is the lone returning starter at receiver. Three starters return on the offensive line including Dan Skipper, who will move to LT from LG, RG Denver Kirkland and RT Bray Cook. Mitch Smothers will take over at center and Luke Charpenter at LG.

Only four starters return on defense led by DE Trey Flowers who may be the best player on the team after earning All-SEC 2nd team honors in 2013. Flowers will be joined by DE Brandon Lewis, DT Darius Philon and DT DeMarcus Hodge. Hodge is the middle run stopper but needs to drop a little weight (343). True freshman DT Bijhon Jackson will provide some much needed depth. Arkansas is thin at LB returning only senior Braylon Mitchell. MLB Brooks Ellis played as a true freshman in 2013. The secondary returns CB senior Tevin Mitchell and FS senior Alan Turner. Turner led the team in tackles in 2013. Rohan Gaines will take over at SS and Carroll Washington is expected to start at corner.

Change has been the norm for Arkansas football in the last few years after Bobby Petrino left the program and the one year John L. Smith stepped in under an interim basis. Bielema is used to winning (Wisconsin) and the bad season left a bitter taste in his mouth. The schedule gets tough early with a road trip to Auburn and then to Texas Tech in the third game. The Razorbacks do get Alabama and LSU at home.
