2014 FLORIDA GATORS FOTBALL PREVIEW

Florida Gators (1984 - Pres)

2013 had to feel surreal for Florida Gators football fans.

A losing season?

That doesn’t happen to Florida.

The pieces were in place. A golden boy coach. An 11-2 season the year before. A stud QB returning.

Then week three comes along and the Vols ruin everything.

Junior QB Jeff Driskel goes down with a broken leg and the Gators fall into a tailspin that not even Ted Striker could pull them out of.

2013 is a season that so many people involved with Florida football will attempt to forget and if everything goes according to plan in 2014 that shouldn’t be too difficult. Driskel returns after rehabbing his injured leg, the defense returns several starters and Head Coach Will Muschamp is feeling the heat from Florida faithful. A recipe for a successful season or another utter disappointment.

Offense

Muschamp and the Gators have made the switch to a spread offense, a move that is a much better fit for Jeff Driskel who threw for almost 500 yards on 61 attempts in the three games he started before being injured in the first quarter of Florida’s week three contest against Tennessee.

Depth at running back will be a great asset to the Gators in 2014 with three running backs returning to the backfield to ease the pressure on QB Jeff Driskel. Sophomore Kelvin Taylor and redshirt Senior Mack Brown combined for 1051 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns. Florida’s backfield also returns Junior Matt Jones who gained 339 yards in five games before suffering a season ending knee injury.

Wide Receiver may be a bit of an issue for Florida this year after losing two of their top three targets to graduation. Driskel will have to rely heavily on redshirt Senior Quinten

Dunbar who has by far the most experience in this year’s receiving corps. Dunbar caught 40 passes last year for 548 yards averaging almost 45 receiving yards per game.  Sophomores Ahmad Fulwood, Demarcus Robinson and Chris Thompson will be thrown immediately into the fray after catching a total of 40 passes between the three last season.

The offensive line should be strong for the Gators this year with many of the lineman having multiple starts under their belt. Right tackle Chaz Green and left tackle D.J. Humphries are both battling back from injuries and will look to anchor this experienced unit.

Defense

There are plenty of questions on offense but defensively Florida is going to be one of the best in the SEC. The entire defensive line returns from a season ago which combined tallied 8.5 sacks. Look for defensive ends Dante Fowler and

Jonathan Bullard to wreak havoc on the edges after totaling 88 tackles between them a year ago.

Florida was let down by their line backing group a year ago and must have them up their game if they hope to be successful. The Gator’s defense struggled against the run a year ago allowing almost 150 yards per game on the ground and the burden of stopping the run this season is placed squarely on the shoulders of the linebackers. Look for veterans Antonio Morrison and Michael Taylor to play much better than they did a year ago which saw them put up lackluster numbers for two experienced players. We will also see if sophomore Jarrad Davis can build on the success he had in his freshman season in which he tallied 24 total tackles, 16 of which were unassisted.

The secondary will be tough for opposing teams to get around with All-American Vernon Hargreaves heading up another experienced defensive units for the Gators. Hargreaves, just a sophomore, had 3 interceptions and 38 tackles in 2013 and is widely considered to be one of the best

corners in the SEC. He will be accompanied by an experienced secondary that allowed just 171 passing yards per game ranking seventh in the nation.

Special Teams

Redshirt senior Andre Debose will be back from his ACL injury a year ago and he will give the Gators a home run threat on kickoff and punt returns. The kicking game will have to be better after sophomore Austin Hardin made just 4 of his 12 field goal attempts last year.

Final Take

The Gators will undoubtedly be better than they were a year ago. The revolving door of quarterbacks is now firmly shut with Jeff Driskel taking over the reins and if he can stay healthy look for the Florida offense to run much more efficiently and scoring won’t be as hard to come by especially with the depth

at running back. Defensively the Gators were really good a year ago but with an offense that couldn’t score the burden was too great for this group. With the pressure on the D easing up look for more big plays from a defensive line that has the potential to be one of the best in the SEC if not one of the best in the country.
