 Kentucky Wildcats (2005 - Pres)

During the SEC media days in Hoover, Alabama, head coach Mark Stoops told the media he was blessed to be at Kentucky. He is hoping that after one year in the system, things will now begin to turn around. Coach Stoops and his staff are beginning to assemble plenty of talent after back-to-back highly rated recruiting classes. 15 starters return including 6 on offense, 8 on defense and the punter.

The Wildcats are hoping to have just one quarterback taking the snaps this season after juggling the position last season. The three top candidates are sophomore Patrick Towles, redshirt freshman Reese Phillips or freshman Drew Barker. OC Neal Brown will be running an up-tempo style offense after last year ranking 107th in scoring at only 20.5 points per game and 107th in total offense at just 341.2 yards per contest.

Whoever the quarterback will be, there will be plenty of playmakers to throw to including five other top six wide receivers. Javess Blue returns as does Ryan Timmons. Both are explosive and have the capabilities to stretch the field. Sophomore Jeff Badet is also expected to be the third starting receiver. Senior Steven Borden will take over at tight end and is expected to make an immediate contribution in this “air raid” offense. For starters return on the offensive line including senior left tackle Darrian Miller, left guard Zach West, center Jon Toth and right tackle Jordan Swindle. Despite the ability to throw the football, Kentucky’s strength maybe it’s running game with Jojo Kemp, Nebraska transfer Braylon Heard and freshman Josh Clemons getting a chance to win the starting job this fall. Clemens has come back from a knee injury and an Achilles tear.

Kentucky’s defense had its moments last year but overall didn’t play as well as they had hoped. Only two starters return up front including senior DE’s Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith. Dupree and Smith combined for 120 tackles, 13 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 2013. Taking over in the middle will be DT’s Mike Douglas and freshman Regie Meant. The Wildcats have only one returning starter at linebacker in Khalid Henderson and the secondary returns only two starters in corner Nate Willis and safety Blake McClain. Junior College safety AJ stamps and JD Harmon, who sat out last season, will be adding speed and size at the corner positions.

Kentucky finished 0 – 8 in 2013 and unless the quarterback situation is settled quickly, the Wildcats may struggle offensively again especially in SEC play. The lack of depth overall on this roster is apparent until Coach Stoops can get another strong recruiting class in Lexington. Trips to Florida, LSU, Missouri, Tennessee and Louisville will give the Kentucky staff a pretty good idea of how much they have progressed in the last year.
