Kansas State Wildcats (1989 - Pres)

Kansas State was inexperienced in key areas on defense in 2013 and will have even more question marks this season with only four starters returning. It all starts with DE Ryan Mueller, who recorded 11 ½ sacks last year which ranked eighth in the country. In order for Mueller and Kansas State to improve on those numbers, Marquel Bryant and Laton Dowling will have to be more productive on the opposite side. Tackle Travis Britz had 6 ½ tackles for loss last season and is big and strong against the run. Chris Brown, Valentino Coleman and JC transfer Terrell Clinckscales will battle for the other DT position. Jonathan Truman is the only starter returning at linebacker and was second on the team in tackles last season, but will need playmakers alongside in order to be effective this season. This fall the Wildcats will look to Dakorey Johnson and Charmeachealle Moore to fill in the other two linebacker positions. The secondary returns only one starter in Dante Barnett, who was named to the MVP of the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl win over Michigan. Randall Evans, Morgan Burns, Danzel McDaniel, Dylan Schellenberg along with freshman Kaleb Prewett will battle for starting positions in the secondary.

Quarterback Jake Waters returns for his senior season after throwing for over 207 yards per game and 14 touchdowns. All expectations are that Waters will exceed his numbers during his senior season meaning Kansas State has a solid chance to win the Big 12 conference. With Waters as the starter, the Wildcats moved quarterback Daniel Sams to wide receiver where he’ll be joined by starters Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton. Lockett had 81 receptions for 1262 yards and 11 touchdowns and is considered one of the most dangerous receivers in the nation. Sexton had 39 receptions for 446 yards in 2013. That trio of receivers may be the best in the conference. The running game will be left to either senior DeMarcus Robinson or true freshman Dalvin Warmack. Robinson has not lived up to expectations and Warmack needs to live up to the hype coming out of high school where he was named the best prep player in the Kansas City metro area after rushing for 4523 yards and scoring 74 touchdowns. Two starters return on the offensive line including center BJ Finney and LT Cody Whitehair. Finney is the cornerstone of the line earning all-conference honors three times. The RG position will belong to Boston Stiverson who gained valuable experience as a sophomore.

Kansas State’s passing game should be solid with the ability to throw the ball deep. Waters has grown as a quarterback and many feel he could be the best in the conference especially with proven weapons around him. If the defense can fill the holes around DE Ryan Mueller and make consistent stops, Kansas State will be in the running for a Big 12 championship.
