1947 Boston's Ted Williams singled off Cleveland's Don Black for the 1,000th hit of his career.
1953 St. Louis Cardinals Enos Slaughter had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one and made a great defensive grab of a liner off the bat of Harvey Kuehn, as the National League defeated the American League, 5-3.
1961 Eddie Matthews clubbed his 500th home run against Juan Marichal at Candlestick Park.
1968 Hank Aaron belted the 500th home run of his career and became the eighth player in history to achieve this feat.
1970 The National League rallied from a 4-1 ninth-inning deficit to beat the American League in 12 innings on a Pete Rose single.
1996 Indy rookie race car driver Jeff Krosnoff was killed in the final laps of the Molson Toronto Race.
1999 The WNBA's first ever All Star game took place at Madison Square Garden. The West defeated the East, 79-61. Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks scored 13 points and was voted the game's MVP.
1999 Three people were killed and five people were injured when an accident happened during the construction of new Brewers stadium Miller Park. The huge crane nicknamed "Big Blue" collapsed on the people.
1999 Longtime voice of the Philadelphia Flyers Gene Hart died at the age of 68.
2004 The LA Lakers traded center Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat for Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant and a first round draft pick.
2004 The Houston Astros fired Manager Jimy Williams.
2004 The Phoenix Suns signed point guard Steve Nash to a five-year, $65 million contract.
2004 Utah was awarded an expansion MLS team.
2008 The New York Islanders fired head coach Ted Nolan.
2009 Baltimore's Adam Jones' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the American League to a 4-3 win over the National League in the All-Star game in St. Louis.
2009 The Chicago Blackhawks named Stan Bowman their new general manager.
2010 The New Jersey Nets named Billy King their new general manager.
