Northwestern Wildcats (1981 - Pres)

The Northwestern Wildcats had a magical 2012 football season and it appeared 2013 was going to be another great season after a 4-0 start. But then the Big Ten season began and disaster struck losing seven straight before finishing out with a road win at Illinois 37 – 34. The difference was winning close games in 2012 and losing close games in 2013. Injuries also plagued the Wildcats losing several key players at critical times throughout the season.

Northwestern will have running back Venric Mark returning after playing only parts of three games last season because of an ankle injury. Mark ran for 1366 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012. Quarterback Kain Colter also missed several games because of various injuries and his backup Trevor Siemian, who will start this season, also had a heel injury that limited his action for most of the Big Ten schedule. Siemian was the starter in Northwestern’s lone win against Illinois throwing for a career-high 414 yards and four scores. With Mark returning as the feature tailback, senior Treyvon Green, who played for Mark last season during his injury, rushed for 736 yards and eight touchdowns, will be the backup. The receiving corps will be deep and will be experienced with the return of seniors Tony Jones, Christian Jones and Dan Vitale. The line will return for starters including right guard Matt Frazier, center Brandon Vitabile, left guard Geoff Mogus and left tackle Paul Jorgensen. The only newcomer will be right tackle Eric Olson.

Northwestern’s defense suffered through an up-and-down year playing extremely well in their first four games and even saw some good times during the Big Ten season but overall they were unable to produce the big plays when needed. The Wildcats defense gave up 423.5 yards of total offense which ranked 88th in the country, 256.2 yards in passing which ranked 99th in the country. The good news is, nine starters return and all should be healthy this fall. Linebacker Chi Chi Ariguzo led the Big Ten in tackles with 106 and he will be joined by linebacker Collin Ellis to form two of the better big-play linebackers in the Big Ten. The line returns three starters including and Dean Lowry, tackles Chance Carter and Sean McEvilly. Also getting time up front will be sophomore Ifeadi Odenigbo who had 5 ½ sacks in limited action last season. End Deonte Gibson will start at one and spot and has a nose for the quarterback. The secondary will have all for starters returning including fourth-year starting safety Ibraheim Campbell, safety Traveon Henry, cornerback Matthew Harris and quarterback Nick VanHoose.

Northwestern was a better football team than their record indicated last season. Now that many of their key players are healthy, there is no doubt the Wildcats will be capable of being a contender in their division. The Wildcats will have three home games to begin the season with California, Northern Illinois and Western Illinois. Their opening Big Ten contest September 27 at Penn State will give an early indication if the Wildcats are contenders or pretenders.
