Iowa Hawkeyes (2002 - Pres)

The Iowa Hawkeyes rebounded from a disappointing 2012 season to go 8 – 5 in 2013 stopping the slide that has been coming for the last few seasons. Iowa 13 other final four games including a home win against Michigan and a road contest at Nebraska before losing in the Outback Bowl against LSU.

12 starters return including 6 on offense led by quarterback Jake Rudock who threw for 2383 yards and 18 touchdowns in his first year as a starter. Rudock needs to improve in several areas including completion percentage, interceptions (13) and passing efficiency. If Rudock is to reach his full potential, the receivers will have to step up in 2014 including Kevonte Martin-Manley who led Iowa with 40 receptions for 388 yards and five scores. Tevaun Smith and Derrick Willies will be the number two and three receivers with Willies stepping up in the spring. I was running game will have numerous candidates including Mark Wiseman who started last year. Jordan Canzeri and Damon Bullock will also look to get carries this season. Iowa’s offensive line is always a staple and will return three starters including right guard Jordan Walsh, center Austin Blythe and left tackle Brandon Scherff. Sean Welsh will take over at left guard and Andrew Donnal will step in at right tackle.

Iowa’s defense ranked 6th overall in 2013 but return only five starters. DT Carl Davis and DT Louis Trinca-Pasat have the size and quickness to clog things up in the middle and DE’s Drew Ott and Mike Hardy will provide speed on the outside against the run. The one area the Hawkeyes need improvement on up front is their pass rush abilities. Losing senior linebackers Christian Kirksey, Anthony Hitchens and James Morris who combined for 35.5 tackles for loss, 11 ½ sacks and six interceptions will be difficult to replace. Iowa will now look to Junior Travis Perry, senior Quinton Alston and sophomore Reggie Spearman. Alston and Spearman are making changes from defensive end to linebacker. The secondary returns to starters including Desmond King and John Lowdermilk. Junior Jordan Lomax will make a position change going from corner to free safety and Sean Draper will be at one of the other corner positions.

The Hawkeyes have a solid foundation and appear to be headed back in the right direction after going 4 – 8 in 2012. The schedule is favorable with the Hawkeyes playing Northern Iowa, Ball State and Iowa State before traveling to Pittsburgh on September 20. Iowa will not play Ohio State or Michigan and will be hosting Western division rivals Wisconsin and Nebraska.
