Nebraska Cornhuskers (2004 - Pres)

In six years under head coach Bo Pelini Nebraska has won at least nine games and yet still the Cornhuskers are lacking a Big Ten championship. Cornhusker fans are starting to get very inpatient and now the pressure will intensify in his seventh season to produce hardware. The Cornhuskers return 13 starters from a team that went 9 – 4 in 2013. The Huskers should be in the thick of things in the re-aligned Western division especially since Nebraska will have to play Ohio State or Michigan this season.

Running back Ameer Abdullah is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1690 yards and averaged 6 yards per carry and scored nine touchdowns. Abdullah will be the feature game breaker in this Nebraska offense. Abdullah will be backed up by some very young but talented running backs. Under center will be sophomore Tommy Armstrong who started eight games last year when Taylor Martinez was hurt. Armstrong will be much more prepared to be the starting quarterback after working extremely hard this spring and knowing the offense much better. One key for Armstrong will be cutting down on the interceptions after throwing eight pics in just 131 pass attempts last season. Senior wideout Kenny Bell will be Armstrong’s top target. Bell caught 52 passes last year for 577 yards and four touchdowns and all signs indicate he will be better in 2014. Junior Sam Burtch and Senior Jamal Turner will man the other wideout positions. The line returns only one starter in left guard Jake Cotton. Nebraska lost five players up front that had a combined 120 career starts. Stepping in at left tackle will be Alex Lewis, at center is Mark Pelini, at right guard Mike Moudy and at right tackle Zach Sterup. The coaching staff believes the line is good and will get better as the season continues.

Nebraska’s defense was respectable in 2013 and by returning seven starters this year, the coaching staff feels they will get even better. Many of the coaching staff feel the defense is championship caliber. DE Randy Gregory is one of the best in the country after having 19 tackles for loss last season. DT Vincent Valentine will give Nebraska plenty of size in the middle to clog up the running game. DT Maliek Collins and DE Greg McMullen are only sophomores but showed plenty of growth in the spring. The Cornhuskers return plenty of experience at linebacker including sophomore Michael Rose who had 66 tackles last year and Junior David Santos returns after having a solid sophomore season. Zaire Anderson proved to be the most consistent linebacker in spring football and will be a force on the outside. Nebraska’s secondary lost three key players from last year’s team and now will look to Josh Mitchell and Corey Cooper to provide leadership for an inexperienced defensive backfield.

The Cornhuskers have been solid but elite for quite some time. Fans are expecting more from Nebraska this season and are no longer satisfied by finishing second or third in their division. Nothing short of playing for a Big Ten championship will be acceptable this season. Nebraska’s first three games all appear to be wins before they are tested against Miami on September 20 at Memorial Stadium. The toughest part of the Big Ten season will be trips to Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa.
