Louisville Cardinals (2013 - Pres)

Bobby Petrino is back at Louisville and will have plenty of weapons to make sure their 12-1 record of 2013 wasn’t a fluke. Expectations will be high with an explosive offense returning but there will be questions on defense.

Will Gardner takes over for Teddy Bridgewater at QB, after having a good spring game. Gardner has size (6-5 230) and an excellent arm and showed good chemistry with his receivers. His favorite target will be Senior DeVante Parker (6-3 209). Parker toyed with the NFL before deciding to return for his final season. TE Gerald Christian broke through with an excellent spring and will be a bigger part of the offense this year. Gardner will have several weapons including Eli Rogers, Kai De La Garza, Robert Clark and Michaelee Harris. The running game belongs to Dominique Brown, Michael Dyer and LJ Scott. Brown will be the starter.

The Cardinals defense was solid in 2013 as they were ranked 2nd in scoring, 1st in rushing, 5th in passing and #1 overall. Only four starters return and that will be an issue. The good news is Louisville built enough depth in their front seven to make up for the loss of several talented players. The three-man front will consist of DE BJ Dubose, NT DeAngelo Brown and DE Sheldon Rankins. Former DE Lorenzo Mauldin will move to OLB after registering 9.5 sacks last season. LB Keith Brown returns from a knee injury and will start along with OLB James Burgess. The Cardinals secondary isn’t as deep as last season with only Terell Floyd and Charles Gaines returning. Louisville lost S Jermaine Reve in the spring and won’t be ready for the start of the season. James Sample will step in at FS and Gerod Holliman will be the starter at SS.

Louisville’s move to the ACC will provide different challenges but this will be a very winnable conference season. The Cards will be challenged right out of the gate against Miami September 1st. Road games at Clemson, Boston College and Notre Dame will also tell us where this program is with Petrino back at the helm.
