Miami Hurricanes (0 - Pres)

The Hurricanes have a situation at QB, they aren’t sure they have anyone who can actually get the ball consistently to their talented group of receivers. Ryan Williams tore his ACL in the spring leaving the job to redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen who was suspended for last year’s bowl game and then did not play well in the spring contest. Battling Olsen for the starting job will be freshman Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier.

Only five starters return offense and one of those is running back Duke Johnson. Johnson was hurt last year against Florida State but should be fully recovered from a broken ankle by September 1st. in just eight games, Johnson rushed for 920 yards. Though the receiving corps will be inexperienced they are very talented with Herb Waters, Philip Dorsett and Stacy Coley. TE Clive Walford returns after having 34 receptions last season, Coley finished with 33 receptions and seven touchdowns and Waters finished with 28 receptions and five scores. Malcolm Lewis figures to get more time after he was slowed by injuries in 2013. Dorsett was slowed by a knee injury last year after having 58 receptions in 2012. The offensive line returns 3 Starters Including C Shane McDermott, Jon Feliciano and Ereck Flowers. All have a combined 73 starts for the Hurricanes.

Miami’s defense gave up nearly 27 points per game and 426.4 yards of total offense in their 9-4 season. The biggest obstacle Miami faced last year was they spent way too much time on the field as opponents had a 42% third down conversion rate. Miami’s defense only forced 27 turnovers and averaged 34 minutes of field time per game. Linebacker Denzel Perryman is a preseason All-American and will be joined by all- ACC DE Anthony Chickillo and all-ACC cornerback Tracy Howard. Miami is small upfront and that poses a problem in trying to collapse the opposition up the middle.  DT Olsen Pierre is listed at 6-5 305 and DT Calvin Heurtelou is 6-3 300. Miami must find a way to get bigger, stronger and deeper before the fall season begins.

The Hurricanes will be tested right out of the gate with a road trip to Louisville on September 1. After home dates against Florida A&M and Arkansas State Miami then we’ll have to travel to Nebraska. There is no doubt Miami will struggle offensively if they can’t find a starting quarterback and if their defense doesn’t play better in 2014.
