2014 Georgia Bulldogs football preview

Georgia Bulldogs (2001 - Pres)

Needless to say it was a disappointing season for the Georgia Bulldogs after going 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the SEC Eastern division. In 2013, the biggest issue was poor tackling and the lack of discipline on defense. Georgia gave up 29 points per game and 375.5 yards of total offense per contest which ranked 45th in the country. The defense will return nine starters and will have a new coordinator in Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt’s solution is basically to start over and made several changes in the depth chart during the spring. What Pruitt saw from the 2013 season was a defense that gave up way too many big plays and could not force enough turnovers. Pruitt will have a solid linebacking corps to build around including Ramik Wilson, who was an All-SEC selection last season. Wilson will be joined by Amarlo Herrera and inside linebackers Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins. Wilson and Herrera combined for 245 tackles in 2013 while Floyd and Jenkins combined for 11 ½ sacks, 21 ½ tackles for loss and 45 QB pressures. The line returns only one starter in Sterling Bailey. Jon Taylor takes over at nose tackle and James DeLoach will be at the other end spot. George’s secondary is a huge concern after breaking down several times last year and they return only one starter in Damian Swann. The Bulldogs also lost Josh Harvey-Clemons after he was kicked off the team for violating team policy. Georgia will after rely on freshman Aaron Davis, sophomore JJ Green and sophomore Tray Matthews.

Georgia Bulldogs (2013 - Pres)Georgia had no problem scoring points last season averaging 36.7 points per game and 484.2 total yards per contest. Only six starters return on offense and will have a new quarterback in Hutson Mason. Mason had a chance to play last year when starter Aaron Murray saw his season and with a torn ACL against Kentucky. Mason looked inconsistent at times especially against teams like Georgia Tech and Nebraska. He should have plenty of help this season if everyone stays healthy including running back Todd Gurley. Gurley is considered by many to be the top rated running back in the country. Joining Gurley in George’s backfield will be electrifying and powerful Keith Marshall. The receiving corps was as deep as any in the country last year until the injuries mounted up. Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley are coming off ACL injuries. Jonathan Rumph was also bothered by a sore hamstring in 2013. If they are all healthy, they’ll be joined by seniors Michael Bennett and Chris Conley to form one of the deepest receiving units in the nation. The offensive line returns only center David Andrews and left tackle John Theus. Theus is moving from right tackle to left tackle and will have to become more consistent in pass protection to be effective.

Georgia will be tested again right out of the gate with a home contest against Clemson on August 30 and then they’ll travel to South Carolina September 13. A season opening loss at Clemson last year put Georgia behind the eight ball all season long. If the Bulldogs can stay healthy and improve their defense, there is no doubt Georgia will contend in the SEC Eastern division.
