 Stanford Cardinal (2002 - Pres)

The Stanford football program has become an elite football program and the challenge to stay a high caliber BCS team will be greater this season with so many losses from last years’ 11-3 squad.

The offense must find a way to replace six starters especially along the offensive line.  Only one starter returns in LT Andrus Peat (6-7 312). Kyle Murphy (6-7 295) will take over at RT, Johnny Caspers (6-4 301) will start at LG, Graham Shuler (6-4 282) takes over at center and Joshua Garnett (6-5 316) will play LG. QB Kevin Hogan is showing confidence in the new group calling them “talented and smart”. The running game is also filled with question marks with the loss of Tyler Gaffney who rushed for 1,709 yards and 21 TD’s. Barry Sanders Jr., Kelsey Young, Ricky Seale and Remound Wright will all get their chance this fall to audition for the starting spot. Hogan returns as the signal-caller and will have WR Ty Montgomery (61 receptions) back as the number one target. Hogan must elevate his game after throwing for 20 TD’s and 10 INT’s. It may take some time to get the offense going with so many new faces and question marks going into the fall.

The Cardinal defense lost four starters including LB Shayne Skov, LB Trent Murphy and DE Ben Gardner.  All three were the heart and soul of the defense. Also gone is All-PAC 12 DB Ed Reynolds, DB Usua Amanam, DE Josh Mauro and DC Derek Mason. The Cardinal will have DE Henry Anderson and DT David Parry up front along with LB James Vaughters and LB AJ Tarpley. The secondary returns three starters including SS Jordan Richards, CB Alex Carter and CB Wayne Lyons. Several players will have to take on greater roles if Stanford looks to repeat as PAC-12 North Division champions in 2014.

Stanford will get tested early with a game two match-up against USC. The road schedule will be very difficult with games at Washington, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Oregon and UCLA.
