Texas Longhorns (0 - Pres)

Finding a QB will be Coach Strong’s biggest priority entering the fall. David Ash is back but his health is always a concern. Ash will be challenged by Tyrone Swoopes, freshman Jerrod Heard and USC transfer Max Wittek. Texas will have plenty of runningback support with starters Malcom Brown and Johnathan Gray returning. Gray is returning from an Achilles injury.  Also in the mix will be Joe Bergeron. Only two starters return on the offensive line including RT Kennedy Estelle (6-7 285) and C Dominic Espinosa (6-4 300).  Kent Perkins is expected to take the starting nod at LT with Sed Powers taking over at LG and Taylor Doyle at RG.  OT Desmond Harrison will also get a chance at starting after not living up to the expectations out of high school.  Texas will return WR’s Jaxon Shipley and Kendall Sanders. Marcus Johnson is expected to see more time at WR.

Texas Longhorns (1974 - Pres)

Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford is inheriting a defense that was the worst in school history. They gave up 25.8 ppg, 183.1 yards on the ground, 224.2 through the air and 407.2 yards total.  Nine starters return including DE Cedric Reed (10 sacks) who passed up a chance to go to the NFL. Big bodies DT Malcom Brown (6-4 320) and DT Desmond Jackson (6-1 301) will plug things up in the middle. Three starters return at linebacker but they lack depth. Dalton Santos, Steve Edmond and Jordan Hicks are back but Hicks is recovering from an Achilles injury. Edmond suffered a lacerated liver against Texas Tech but is expected to be ready this fall. Quandre Diggs, Duke Thomas and Mykkele Thompson return in the secondary with Josh Turner stepping in at FS.

Texas went 8-5 in 2013 and they needed a new beginning after seeing Mack Brown continue to struggle getting this program to an elite level. Coach Strong wants to win championships but has been lowering peoples’ expectations knowing there is work to be done.  The Longhorns will see some early tough contests against BYU and UCLA. The conference schedule will see early tests against Baylor and Oklahoma with road trips to Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
