2014 St. Louis Rams football preview

St. Louis Rams (2000 - Pres)

One thing has been consistent for St. Louis over the last couple of years and that has been the Rams have been consistently average. Head coach Jeff Fisher has made the Rams respectable and now they’re in year three of their rebuilding program.

Quarterback Sam Bradford was headed toward a career year when he suffered a season ending knee injury in game seven at Carolina. Despite losing Bradford the Rams still scored more points than they had since the 2006 season. Bradford is healthy again and will be ready for the season opener. If the Rams are to be successful on offense this season the receivers and running backs must start minimizing dropped passes, fumbles and start creating separation. Bradford’s four main receivers return including Chris Givens, Kenny Britt, Brian Quick and Tavon Austin. The Rams passed on Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins in the draft which would have given Bradford another target to stretch the defense. Givens, Britt, Quick and Austin have all failed thus far to live up to their abilities. Tight end Jared Cook had a career-high 51 receptions in his first year with the Rams but he too was inconsistent. St. Louis will have plenty of depth at running back with Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham, Isaiah Pead and third-round draft pick Tre Mason. The offensive line should be better in 2014 with the addition of Auburn tackle Greg Robinson. Robinson is 6-5 and 332 pounds. Robinson will play left guard for the Rams. He’ll be joined by left tackle Jake Long, center Scott Wells, right guard Rodger Saffold and right tackle Joe Barksdale.

The Rams will have a new defensive coordinator in Gregg Williams. Williams will have one of the best end tandems in the NFL in Robert Quinn and Chris Long. The Rams also added tackle Aaron Donald in the draft. Donald may be the best interior pass rusher in the 2014 NFL draft. The strength of the Rams defense will be up front with tackles Michael Brockers and Kendall Langford. End William Hayes will also see plenty of playing time. To show you how good the front seven could be, there are five first-round picks that could be playing at any one time this season. The linebackers return all three starters including James Laurinaitis, Alec Ogletree and Jo-Lonn Dunbar. The weak link in the Rams defense may be its secondary. Starting corners Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson make too many mistakes. Safety TJ McDonald and Rodney McLeod also have a lot of work to do in avoiding the big play. Rookie LaMarcus Joyner out of Florida State will play the nickel and may have to make an immediate contribution to the weak secondary.

Head coach Jeff Fisher is widely respected and well thought of around the National Football League. However some are now beginning to question his won-loss record and the lack of success in St. Louis. He will have to make significant progress in 2014 but the problem is he plays in the NFL’s toughest division. They must improve their play at wide receiver, tight end and secondary. If Sam Bradford is to stay healthy, the offense of line must also stay healthy. It’s bad enough that the Rams play in the NFC West but the non-division schedule will include games against Denver, Kansas City and Philadelphia – all playoff teams from 2013.
