2014 Clemson Tigers football preview

Clemson Tigers (1977 - Pres)

Coach: Dabo Swinney, 51-23 @ Clemson

Finding a replacement for quarterback Tajh Boyd in the spring was the main priority for head coach Dabo Swinney. When all was said and done Senior Cole Stoudt became the clear starter. Stoudt is a very solid passer and can run the football and completed nearly 80% of his 59 passes in 2013. Finding a solid running game may not be as easy with Junior Zac Brooks looking to stay healthy in 2014. Senior DJ Howard could step in but he is a career backup player who gained only 213 yards last season. Redshirt freshman Wayne Gallman could also see time at running back as he possesses excellent speed and is also considered a power running back. CJ Davidson may also get time this fall. Receivers Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant left early for the National Football League. They combined for 143 receptions 2292 yards and 19 touchdowns. That production will be hard to replace.  Adam Humphries who had 41 receptions last season now becomes the number one target. Joining Humphries will be Mike Williams who many believe is good enough to go in the first round of the NFL draft. Charone Peake was a starter in 2013 before tearing his ACL. Peake is hoping to be 100% this fall. Also in the mix will be freshman Demarre Kitt, Kyrin Priester and Artavis Scott. The line returns three starters including left guard David Beasley, center Ryan Norton and right guard Khalon Davis.

Clemson Tigers (1976 - Pres)

Clemson’s defense is expected to be better this year than they were in 2013. Three of the four starters return upfront including defensive end Corey Crawford, defensive end Vic Beasley and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Beasley is a consensus All-American who had 13 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in 2013. Jarrett could be considered as one of the most underrated lineman in the country. Two of the three starting linebackers return including Junior Travis Blanks and Stephone Anthony. Blanks was a freshman All-American but struggled at times as a sophomore last season. He is hoping to be 100% in 2014 after tearing his ACL in November. The secondary will be inexperienced with only one starter returning in Robert Smith. Martin Jenkins and Garry Peters will bring back-up experience to the secondary along with redshirt freshman Mackensie Alexander. Alexander made coaches take notice in spring practice with his speed and coverage ability. Safety Jayron Kearse is also very athletic and has good coverage skills.

 Clemson Tigers (1976 - Pres)

Clemson’s football program has become like many power programs in the country where they reload, not rebuild. The Tigers won 11 games last year including an Orange Bowl victory over Ohio State. In order to have that success in 2014, they will have to get an inexperienced group on offense playing to the next level and they will have to do it quickly. Clemson opens the season at Georgia August 30 and will play at Florida State in the third game of the season on September 20. The Tigers will either be in the national championship picture after three weeks or they may find themselves looking to survive late in the season just to get to a bowl game.
