College football’s champions will have some holes to fill after winning the title last year. They do return Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston threw for 4057 yards and had 44 total touchdowns. Winston did have some off field issues over the winter and it will be interesting to see if he will come back and play as well as he did last year. He will be protected by one of the best and most experienced offensive lines in college football. Four starters return from last year’s group including Cameron Irving, Trey Jackson, Bobby Hart and Josue Matias. Senior Karlos Williams rushed for 730 yards and 11 touchdowns after moving from safety to running back early in 2013. Williams also averaged 8 yards per carry. Williams will be without James Wilder and Devonta Williams who both left early for the NFL. When Winston does throw the football his favorite target will be senior receiver Rashad Greene. Greene had 1128 receiving yards last season. Senior Christian Green has emerged as the other top target. Florida State will also have one of the nation’s best TE’s Nick O’Leary.

Florida State’s defense will have a new coordinator in Charles Kelly. There are some holes on the defense but there’s plenty of promising talent available. Losing DT Timmy Jernigan will be hard for Florida State to replace. Eddie Goldman, Desmond Hollin and Nile Lawrence – Stample will be joined up front by DE Mario Edwards Jr. who is one of the more physically dominating players in the conference. The linebacking corps will be relatively inexperienced with only Terrence Smith returning. Reggie Northrup and Ukeme Eligwe have the most experience and will battle for time with EJ Levenberry, Ro’Derrick Hoskins and Matthew Thomas. This year’s secondary could be better than last year’s even without Lamarcus Joyner and Terrence Brooks. Juniors Ronald Darby and P.J. Williams will be joined by Jalen Ramsey, Nate Andrews and Nick Waisome in the secondary.

Florida State won last year’s national championship with very few experts at the beginning of the season expecting them to do so. They enter this year with plenty of question marks but they have college football’s best player under center and a slew of talent on both sides of the football. Jimbo Fisher and Florida State will get tested early when they play Oklahoma State on August 30 and Clemson on September 20. No matter who they play Florida State will have their sights set on the college playoff in January.
