Oklahoma Sooners (0 - Pres)

Oklahoma won 11 games last season and tied for second in the conference after going 7-2.  In the Sugar Bowl Oklahoma pounded Alabama 45-31. If the Sooners plan on making it to the next level the offense will have to figure out several personnel changes and look for a new identity. In the meantime the defense should be the strength of this team.

Trevor Knight will be the quarterback in 2014. In Oklahoma’s win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, night through four 348 yards and four touchdowns. Night will have a lot of support in the passing game as a receiver Sterling Shepard returns as one of the conference’s top receivers. Shepard had 51 catches for 603 yards and seven touchdowns last season. TE Taylor McNamara, Issac Ijalana and Blake Bell round out a talented receiving corps. Oklahoma has always been known for having talented running backs Keith Ford will be this year’s go to guy but he does fumble the football too much. Alex Ross is an extremely talented running back but at times gets too emotional. Freshman Joe Mixon has been regarded as one of the nation’s top high school running backs and may see time this season. The line at Oklahoma could be one of the best they’ve had in several years. Tackles Tyrus Thompson and Daryl Williams have 40 starts between them. Guards Adam Shead and Nila Kasitati have started 35 combined games.

 Oklahoma Sooners (1967 - Pres)

Oklahoma’s defense has found new life under Mike Stoops. The Sooners attack more and put constant pressure on the opposing quarterback. Oklahoma led the conference in total defense giving up just 350 yards per game and 22 points. Nine starters return from last year’s team. The front seven may be as good as anyone in the country and could be better if tackle Jordan Wade returns healthy from back surgery. Ends Charles Tapper had 49 tackles and 5 ½ sacks, teammate Chuka  Ndulue had 42 tackles and 2 ½ sacks. Geneo Grissom will move to linebacker after having two sacks two fumble recoveries and a touchdown in last year’s bowl win. He will be joined by Eric Striker who had 50 tackles and 6 ½ sacks last season. Striker also had three sacks against Alabama. Dominique Alexander was named the conferences defensive newcomer of the year after registering 80 tackles in 2013. The secondary will return three starters including Zach Sanchez who emerged as one of the conference’s top young cornerbacks. Sanchez will be joined by Julian Wilson and Quentin Hayes.

Many are picking Oklahoma to win this year’s national championship. If the offense finds its identity fast enough Oklahoma will certainly be favored to win the Big 12. Until that time, the defense should be able to carry the load. Oklahoma’s early schedule is very favorable with home games against Louisiana Tech and Tennessee and a road contest at Tulsa. Oklahoma’s first real test may come on the road at West Virginia on September 20th.
