The Toledo Rockets will enter a new season with a lot of uncertainty.  The biggest uncertainty for the Rockets will be at the quarterback position. Sophomore Logan Woodside is the only player that is taken snaps for the Rockets last season. Woodside will be battling with Alabama transfer Philip Ely for the starting position.

Toledo will have to find a way to replace 1000 yard rusher David Fluellen.  Sophomore running back Kareem Hunt averaged 6.3 yards per carry in 2013 and returns after rushing for 866 yards in a backup role in 2014.  Toledo will have a veteran offense of line that was one of the best in the conference at protecting the quarterback and the return for starters. NFL prospect and All-MAC guard Greg Mancz will be counted on along with fellow starter Jeff Myers at the other guard position and Josh Hendershot and Chase Nelson at the tackles.

Toledo’s defense will have to show much improvement in 2014 if they are to be contenders in the Mid-American Conference Western division. They return 10 players back with starting experience and at least a half a dozen of those have gained all-conference recognition from 2013. Leading the defense is senior linebacker Junior Silvestre. Also returning is junior Trent Voss, Chase Murdoch and Derek Batt.

There is a lot of experience on the defensive front line and that depth should keep the front seven thrash for every game. The defensive front seven had the ability to disrupt that the opposing passing attack and that was a strength for the team in 2013. The secondary will be led by senior cornerback Cheatham Norrils and senior safety Jordan Haden.

Toledo was nothing more than a spectator last season after tying for third place in the Western division. This could be a motivated team in 2014 to get back to the postseason. With 16 starters returning including a dominating offense of line, there is a lot of optimism as we get close to the 2014 football campaign.
